Czech governement allows drug possession

Government of Czech Republic had published “The limits of impunity”. It decriminalize possession of small amount of drugs. From January, 2010 it will be legal to possess 1,5 g of heroin, 1 g of cocaine, 2 g of amphetamine, 15 g of marihuana, up to 4 extasy pills and up to 5 LSD pills. It will be also legal to grow up to 5 plants and 40 hallucinogenic mushrooms.
In socialistic Europe’s eyes it is supporting drug addiction and it has been already much criticized by European politicians. But from our libertarian point of view it’s a very good step forward to allow anyone to smoke what they want.
Prohibition is always ineffective and completely abortive. No matter if it concern drugs, alcohol, pornography or red hats with pompons it is obvious that complete removal of anything is impossible. There will always be people who want some articles and people who’ll sell them legally or not. Every prohibition is always a great present for criminals who can get huge profit from illegal trade. Al Capone said “If people would not want alcohol only idiot would want to sell it to them”. If people want something it’s impossible to ban it completely, they’ll get it illegally instead. Prohibition in USA, the state of freedom, lasted in years 1920-1933. It fully prohibited alcohol and as we all know it caused sudden growth of delinquency and corruption in every step of state administration. Don Quixote-like war with alcohol was also obviously financed by American society. The government had a chance to steal more money from people and the criminal organizations all over USA had a stunning chance to enrich. They used it very well and we can see it even now. Without prohibition there won’t be any huge fortunes of American criminals.
But the drug prohibition breaks fundamental right of everyone – right to decide what to do. We’re all incapacitated and covered with the magnanimous and disinterested protection of the government. We’re all protected from our own choice. Isn’t adult responsible enough to do what wants to him or herself if not harming anyone? Why so many people thinks that civil servants knows some things better and can make bans or orders? Why if I want to harm myself state doesn’t allow me to? Why alcohol and cigarettes are legal if more harmful than marihuana, extasy or LSD? But who am I? Politicians knows better what is good for us. Hail the government for protecting us from ourselves!
